Ray worked in landscaping for decades before knee and back trouble led him to become an assessor. After losing colleagues to suicide and seeing trade pressures mount, he trained as a mental health first aider. He now visits around 150 contractors, spotting signs of distress and offering a confidential ear over coffee.
