Growing up in Barking and Dagenham in an immigrant family, Valentina was too shy to speak up in school and knew few people who went to university. Through school tutorials with a PhD tutor, she gained confidence debating ideas and researched higher education on her own. She went on to become the only student from her school to apply to Oxford, where she completed her second year studying law.
