Make content about: Stephen saved an old gravel quarry
Stephen helped save an exhausted gravel quarry from becoming a landfill, transforming it into a flourishing nature reserve.
This story
In the late 1990s, an East Yorkshire sand and gravel quarry was slated to become a waste disposal site. Stephen and other local birdwatchers opposed the plans, and after the planning application was rejected, he approached Yorkshire Wildlife Trust to buy the land. He joined the working group that reshaped the industrial site, which has since grown into a thriving wetland with breeding avocets and otters.
