Make content about: Gemma helped families learn to sign

Central Lancashire Deaf Children's Society families once struggled to communicate without implants. Now parents, siblings and relatives can all sign together.

This story

Many families in Central Lancashire Deaf Children's Society had been encouraged not to sign, leaving relatives struggling to communicate when children removed their hearing implants. After seeing how signing helped at home, chair Gemma secured a grant from the National Deaf Children's Society to run family sign language courses. The group filled two courses and now has a waiting list, enabling parents, siblings and extended relatives to communicate during bath times, swimming and holidays.

Where you could take it

Join a family sign language session with Gemma and the society to learn basic signs alongside parents and children.
